macOS Folder Timeline

Summary

An animated timeline tracing the visual evolution of the macOS folder icon from its 1984 pixel art origins through each major design era up to 2025.

Visual description

A white canvas centers a large black pixel-art folder outline with a rounded tab, drawn as a stepped bitmap. Below it is a horizontal timeline of thin vertical tick marks that fade from solid black at the left to near invisible at the right, with year labels from 1984 to 2025 beneath, the first bolded. A small cursor arrow sits at the lower left, and the layout is very sparse with generous whitespace.

Key takeaway

Use a tick-mark scrubber with a fading opacity gradient and a bolded active year as a lightweight timeline control. It lets a single hero object morph through eras without any extra chrome.
