Summary

A two-color billboard that carries almost nothing but a very heavy wordmark on fluorescent yellow, shot from directly underneath so the panel tilts into the city skyline.

Visual description

The camera is at pavement level looking up, so the billboard sits as a skewed quadrilateral filling the middle of the frame, its top edge tipping away and its lower edge cropping the mounting rail. The panel is flat fluorescent yellow green, the brightest thing in the picture by a wide margin. In the upper left, three short lines of black italic sans-serif read "Shockingly simple checkout." tight and left-aligned. Occupying the bottom half at enormous scale, the BOLT wordmark in a very heavy black grotesque, all caps, letters nearly touching, with the T cropping into the panel edge. There is no logo mark, no url and no product image. Around it, a red brick apartment block with fire escapes and graffiti tags fills the left, a paler stone tower catches low sun on the right, bare winter branches and a clear blue sky above, and beneath the panel a black steel canopy with an M-1100 sign and a yellow PARK sign in the lower right. The lens distortion bows the vertical lines outward.

Key takeaway

Two type sizes and two colors are the entire design: one small italic line to say the thing, one huge wordmark to own the space. The extreme low angle turns a flat rectangle into an object that leans over the viewer, which is what makes an otherwise plain layout feel loud.

Reuse notes

The right reference when a category with dull conventions, payments and checkout here, wants a shouted brand-first out-of-home. Depends on a wordmark with enough weight to survive at this scale and a fluorescent that actually prints. The photography angle is doing half the work, so budget for the shot, not just the artwork.
